Our Bulk Milk bovine TB surveillance study is progressing well. The bulk milk sample collection and testing phase has been completed, with just over 5,000 herds participating across the country, and approximately 18,000 bulk milk TB tests being carried out by the NML team in Glasgow. While that constituted a mammoth effort on their part, it was certainly easier than 18,000 dairy herd skin tests!
The results will now be sent to SRUC for collation with APHA’s bTB database. A detailed analysis of bulk milk results will review the connection between bulk milk test results and bTB herd status.
As a reminder, it was a pre-condition of carrying out the study that the Enferplex bulk milk results are not reported back to participating farms. However, we are looking forward to discussing the project findings with the wider industry on completion of the study in early 2025.
We would like to thank all of the participating farmers and processors for your engagement in allowing this study to happen. We are optimistic that the study findings will help to develop a significant role for bulk milk testing in future bTB control.
