What happens when a cow goes down? In this episode, Dorset tenant farmer James Yeatman and Synergy Farm Health research lead Rachel Hayton discuss a farmer-designed “cow ambulance” that is helping dairy farms improve down cow recovery, welfare and staff safety. Developed through practical experience and supported by Innovate UK research, the system combines a purpose-built bucket, reel and strap arrangement with a simple nine-step training process to reduce injuries, minimise stress and improve outcomes for both cows and handlers. The conversation explores the lessons learned, the importance of staff training, and how a more professional approach to down cow management can benefit animal welfare, farm efficiency and public perception. Recorded in September 2025; all information was correct at the time of recording.
