Sheep Welfare and Emergency Dispatch
Maximising sheep welfare is at the centre of what we are all striving towards as part of our production system. How we manage diseased animals and those in pain is critical. Access to prompt euthanasia by approved techniques is a requirement of both Red Tractor and DEFRA. For the majority of our sheep flocks – the emergency service provided by the practice or by your local fallen stock provider will meet the guidelines. For some flocks the ability to dispatch adult animals where in distress, may be a positive welfare adjunct to their system. This theoretical and practical course will consider painful conditions in sheep, the decision of when to euthanase, care of the captive bolt and include a practical session with cadavers. This is recommended for experienced shepherds. This course is NOT suitable for Smallholders.
