New research reveals hidden TB infection in UK dairy herds
A major GB-wide study of 5,000 dairy herds found that 25% tested positive for bovine TB at least once during 2023, including 20% of herds that were officially TB-free and trading without restrictions.
The findings, discussed by Synergy Farm Health Research Lead Rachel Hayton and AHDB/TB Advisory Service veterinary expert Sarah Tomlinson, come from an Innovate UK-funded project using the Enferplex blood and milk test at bulk milk level across England, Wales and Scotland.
The results suggest that officially TB-free status does not always mean infection-free, supporting long-held concerns that undetected infection can move between herds through trade. Both experts highlighted the need for a more practical approach to managing infected animals, similar to current Johne’s disease control programmes.
Since the interview was recorded, England’s refreshed bovine TB strategy has been published and reflects this shift in approach. Find out what the changes mean for farmers in this week’s episode: TB Strategy Refresh: What Really Changes for You?
