DOWNER COW PROFILES
Knowing what a downer cow is lacking in can be invaluable in these often frustrating cases. Usually calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and glucose are tested for. Low levels will indicate a need for treatment. CK can be tested for to show the degree of muscle damage, and give an accurate prognosis.
Liver enzymes are measured and will give a diagnosis and prognosis in cows suspected of having fatty liver disease. Where fluke is suspected liver profiles can also confirm the diagnosis and again give an idea of expected response to treatment. Liver profiles can also be used in cases of suspected poisoning.
METABOLIC / NUTRITIONAL PROFILES
An excellent way of measuring the nutritional status of your herd / flock, samples are usually taken from a selection of animals to identify and deficits in the diet. Energy, protein and mineral status will be reported back depending on individual requirements.
TRACE ELEMENT PACKAGE
Trace elements such as selenium or copper are an essential part of the diet. Cases of suspected mineral toxicity / deficiency can be investigated by measuring levels in the blood, usually by sampling small groups of animals.
